The area around Reno/Sparks is a wonderland of lofty mountain ranges, arid desert basins, lush alpine meadows and sparkling lakes connected by thousands of miles of dirt roads and trails. Exploring it on a dual sport can be one of life’s most enjoyable and exciting experiences.

The Dust Devils have many scheduled and impromptu outings each year. Scheduled rides are led by a member who scouts the route, chooses a meeting location and publishes a ride description. These usually last for most of the day and are open to all club members.

Impromptu rides occur spontaneously when someone puts it out there... “Who wants to go riding?” The group decides when and where to meet and mutually agrees on a route.

Ridgecrest Desert RideSaturday, February 16, 2019at Ridgecrest CA

Kurt Fankhauser is planning a ride over the President's Day weekend (February 16-18) in the Mojave Desert in Southern California.  I picked this area to get out of the cold and snow here in Reno/Tahoe.  I am planning to meet a few friends there, but if any Dust Devils want to come and have fun you are more than welcome.  We will be camping at the Wagon Wheel OHV Staging Area, which is near Ridgecrest, CA.  To find it just enter "Wagon Wheel OHV Staging Area" in Google Maps or your car GPS.  It is about a 6 hour drive south from Reno.  We will mostly be riding in the Spangler Hills OHV area, but may venture out as far as Death Valley as well.  I'll add some more info on possible rides in follow-on posts.

See DDMC Forum "Club Rides" for location map, GPS tracks and other information.

The riding in this area will be mostly packed sand, sandy washes, and hard-packed hills.  The Spangler Hills OHV area is pretty big (57,000) acres - big enough that you can run out of gas in the middle of nowhere.  You don't need a GPS to find good areas to ride, but I am planning to use mine just so I don't get lost.  I have GPX files for these rides so far, and I'll probably add another long ride (maybe to Death Valley).  The shorter rides could be loops that we can run a few times.

1. Wagon Wheel to Trona Pinnacles, 35 miles, B+ level ride
2. Spangler Hills Singletrack 1, 18 miles, A- level ride
3. Spangler Hills to Johannesburg to Red Rock Canyon, 96 miles (gas in Johannesburg), B level ride

I've attached the GPX files for these rides to this post.  I'm not sure you can download them, however.  If not, just send me a message and I will email them to you.  Let's ride!

Boomtown to SierravilleSaturday, November 17, 2018at Verdi
Dave G will be leading an easy ride from Boomtown to Sierraville for lunch.   Big bike friendly.  Meet up at the Boomtown Chevron.  Clutches out at 10:30.
Donner TunnelsSaturday, November 10, 2018at Donner

Roger Liles will be leading a ride through the tunnels and onto some rough trails beyond.  Meet up across from the Donner Ski Ranch.  Clutches out at 12 noon.  Small bike ride.

You can bring a big bike if you just want to do the tunnels which are fairly easy.  The trails beyond are a bit sketchy though.

Boreal Observed TrialsSaturday, September 1, 2018at Boreal Ski Comples
On September 1st & 2nd, Nationally recognized Trials riders will descend on the Boreal Ski slopes.  Several Dust Devils will be making a street ride to Boreal, to take in the action on both days of competition.  Recommend wearing light clothing, hiking shoes and water.  Would be nice to have an organized ride to the event.  Spectator costs are $25 for both days or $15 per day.  Competition runs from 8:30 am to 5 pm each day.

Boreal Observed Trials Link

I will be riding out both days on my street bike with other DDMC members.  We could meet at Gold Ranch Casino (Verdi) for breakfast.

8:00 am meet and eat and then ride to Boreal.

BIG MOAB CLUB RIDEMonday, May 28, 2018at Moab, Utah

I, Chris Hanna, Wayne Gilmore, Paul Purchard, David Guilford, and others, will be heading for Moab Utah in Early June for two weeks of riding. I and Wayne will be dry camping near Court House Rock area, which is a few mile West of Arches View RV Park (Utah 191), which is 15 miles West of Moab. Both are between Arches National Park and Canyon Lands National Park, both of which are easily within riding distance.

Members are welcome to join us at our site and share our accommodations and cooking equipment.  We will have oCne spare dual sport bike with us for use by Adventure bikers that may show up.  Many of the scenic trails and sites are accessible by large adventure bikes.

See DDMC Forum "Club Rides", 2018 Big Ride - Moab Utah, for more details throughout the post.
