Moon Rocks is in the Hungry Valley about 15 miles north of Reno off State Route 445 and Winnemucca Ranch Road. The 19,000-acre site offers free off-road riding and camping and attracts about 40,000 people per year. In 2020, an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 people visited the area just over Memorial Day weekend.
Improvements include kiosks and signage; a fence for resource protection to limit the uncontrolled, user-created expansion of camping areas and OHV routes; upgrading road and route maintenance with traffic control barriers and establishing control access points; defining camp areas and installing a permanent restroom; providing dumpsters for waste disposal; and implementing speed limits near campsites and on access roads.
