I still think it is a good idea to check out the Diversion Dam Campground on the way in to Fouts Springs. If it is open it might be a better choice. I haven’t been there for years, but the Fouts Springs Campground used to fill up quickly.

andres ruggieroParticipantWhere is the dam campground?
What time and day you guys getting thereJune 15, 2026 at 10:04 pm #7625
Kurt138ModeratorHey guys,
Here is a google maps pin for Diversion Dam Campground.
It is 3 miles west of the town of Stonyford and 5 miles east of Fouts Springs. We have plated bikes so we can ride to the trails on Fouts Springs Road.
Bonus – you can swim in Stony Creek right there. There is a swimming hole at Fouts Springs too but you have to scramble over some rocks to get there.

Kurt138ModeratorI attached the GPX files Andres provided for us again to this post. The only change I made was to give them new names so us outsiders can understand which one is which.
Here is a map screenshot showing the routes:
Davis Flat is on the top right – all of the routes start and end there. I don’t know which direction they go (CW or CCW) but Andres will know. They are probably fun in either direction.
The Jackhammer is 49.75 miles. Did riders do the same loop twice? The Jackhammer was 100 miles back in the day.
The LilHammer is 66.83 miles.
The Bearfoot is 58.45 miles but it looks like there are a couple options which would change the distance.
The routes all traverse plenty of the OHV area. The Bearfoot goes up Potato Hill, which is probably a B- route. I would guess some of the Jackhammer could be A- or maybe even A, just based on past experience.

Kurt138ModeratorHow do you pay for camping there you ask? I googled and here is the scoop.
Camping at the Stonyford campgrounds (like Little Stony, Fouts, or Davis Flat) in the Mendocino National Forest operates on a first-come, first-served basis and utilizes a cashless “Scan and Pay” system.
You cannot reserve sites ahead of time. Payment must be completed digitally at the campground using the following steps:
1. Download the App: Because cell service is extremely limited in the area, you must download the Recreation.gov App to your smartphone before you drive up. Note: when you download the app open it so you can put in your information.
2. Pick Your Site: Arrive at the campground, drive in, and physically claim an empty campsite.
3. Scan the QR Code: Walk up to the campground’s information kiosk and use your phone’s camera to scan the posted QR code.
4. Pay Online: Follow the on-screen prompts to pay the fee (standard sites typically run about $5 per night).
5. Display Your Receipt: If you don’t have cell service, the app will note your payment as pending. Be sure to write your confirmation number down on a piece of paper and display it on your vehicle dashboard for the rangers.

Kurt138ModeratorWhere is the dam campground?
What time and day you guys getting thereHey Andres, we are planning to get there around mid-day on Friday. If there is space available at Diversion Dam campground we’ll probably set up camp there. If it’s full we’ll go on to Fouts Springs. If Fouts Springs is full I guess we’ll be stuck with Davis Flat.
I’ll call you tomorrow to make sure you have my number.

ParticipantKurt, Paul, and I cannot make the Stonyford ride. I believe it will be too hot for my current condition. I have several current & detailed Forest Service maps for the riding trails at Stonyford if you would like them. I already gave David G. some.

Hey Dean, good call – you need to be careful with your chemo. My dad went through that and it was rough.
For everyone else on this ride, the forecast is calling for mid-80s this weekend there, so it should be cooler than here at least.
I just talked to Andres and he thinks Diversion Dam is open for swimming but not camping…so Fouts Springs is the most likely weekend destination.

ModeratorWhen do you guys think you will arrive?
June 16, 2026 at 3:39 pm #7643
Kurt138ModeratorI am shooting for noon at Fouts Springs, going via the Highway 20 route.
I’ll call around to see if anyone is close when I pass through Williams – maybe we can convoy in from there. We’re going to lose cell signal somewhere along the way.
