Donner Ski Ranch has hosted a motorcycle weekend for many years, featuring hill climbs, trials and supermoto races. They even used to have a TT-style road race up old Highway 40 from Donner Lake to the summit at Donner Ski Ranch. I believe in ’99 they had an MX race a couple miles down the road at the Soda Springs ski resort. I did that one – it was super fun with an all-natural course and great dirt. This may be the best dirt-oriented event in our area. Where else can you watch a hill climb event from the deck of a ski lodge?
If they had an MX race I would sign up, but I am going to pass on the XC race. I’m not ready to thrash my bike in rock gardens, ha. Here is the flyer promoting the XC, hard enduro and hill climb events if you are interested though.

I went last year. There isn’t much to see from the lodge. A little hike to get to the good stuff. I think that the route was about 11 miles long. The lead rider did a lap in 47 minutes. Had to wait 11 minutes for the second place rider. Many didn’t complete a single lap.

Hey Rick, I meant that you can see the hill climb competition pretty well from the ski lodge. A XC race is not real fan friendly any way you slice it.
With the lead rider 11 minutes ahead of the second place guy it sounds like you must have been watching the hard enduro last year?
The last time I was at the hillclimb competition a friend parked his mountain bike at the edge of the parking lot. A pro hillclimber went up the hill with an open class bike – a multi-cylinder nitrous machine. A rock about the size of a basketball kicked off the top of hill climb, rolled all the way down past chair #1 and flew into his mountain bike. The rock put a huge dent in the top tube and the mountain bike had to be junked. So if you go don’t park your Corvette near the main hill.

Yes it was the hard enduro. It was a really good spectator event. Don’t want to get too close to that route either. You could get run over.
Looks like I will be out of town that weekend but if not I will do it again.
