Dave GModeratorI use a ruggedized smart phone with the Locus Maps app.
Some like the ON X or Gaia map apps. Any regular phone will make a pretty good gps, Maps can be downloaded for offline use. No connection needed.August 5, 2026 at 9:40 pm #7952
Jose HanaganParticipant$600 is for the 6″ zumo. The 4.7″ is $485 on Amazon.

Kurt138ModeratorHey Dan,
If you can’t find a cheap Garmin another possibility is to just get an unlocked phone (not tied to a data plan). Phone GPS receivers work without cell towers or mobile data, so no need for a data plan. I just checked ebay and unlocked brand new cell phones with Android G25 spec can be had for $80.
To install a navigation mobile app and load maps just connect to the Internet using WiFi. Make sure to load the maps to your mobile app in offline mode, as Dave mentioned. You can also connect to a PC with a USB data cable to load maps to your mobile app.
Of course you could use your real phone to do all this, but IMHO a phone you don’t care about is a better choice for offroad riding.
EDIT: I’m pretty much saying exactly the same thing as Dave did in his post up above, but I used more words.
