I am planning a 4-day road ride to the SuperMotocross (SMX) Final at the LA Coliseum on Saturday, September 23rd.
The SMX Final is the season-ending race that riders must qualify for from points gained in the AMA Supercross and Motocross seasons. If you have ever seen an AMA SX or MX race you know that it is intense. The SMX Final will have a $10,000,000 payout and probably some fat contract bonuses, so it could be the race of the year. The SMX Final track is planned to be a hybrid MX/SX track, and it will climb/drop off from the peristyle at the Coliseum like some of the classic races from the 70s and 80s.
My plan is to maximize the fun on the ride as well as attending the event, so my route will feature a fair amount of back road riding. Here is my general route plan:
Day 1: Leave Reno on Friday morning (9/22) and take 395 south to Sonora Pass, then from Sonora follow Highway 49 to Mariposa. Highway 49 between Sonora and Mariposa is fantastic. Continue on to a hotel near LA – I am thinking of crossing the central valley after the Sierras and spending the night in Ojai. We’d get in after dark for sure.
Day 2: Leave Ojai on Saturday morning and pickup Highway 101 at Ventura Beach. Continue on to the LA Coliseum – it’s a two hour ride from Ojai to the Coliseum. Watch the race and maybe get in some post-race festivities in LA. We don’t want to stay in downtown LA so we’d probably ride back to the same hotel in Ojai (book it for two nights).
Day 3: Easy ride day – leave Ojai on Sunday morning and take 154 north up to San Luis Obisbo, then follow Highway 1 to Pismo Beach, which would be a good lunch stop. Then turn east on Highway 46 to Paso Robles. Spend the night in Paso Robles at a hotel.
Day 4: Leave Paso Robles on Monday morning and return to Reno. The route would go over Sonora Pass or possibly Tioga Pass if open, then Highway 395. Maybe we could get home before dark on Monday.
I haven’t created map files or calculated mileage yet but Day 1 and Day 4 will be long days in the saddle for sure.
I think I am going to cancel this ride due to lack of vacation time (and plans for other rides).
However, I am planning to host an SMX Final Watch Party and DDMC BBQ at my house instead. If you are interested check out the Forum link I just posted here:
