Roads less traveled – July 19 2026

Today was “set your dang clickers day” (check your calendar, you missed it) so I headed into the forest for a little suspension adjustment ride.  There are quite a few roads out there that we just don’t get ridden enough.  Today three routes that were new to me but certainly not new and one old one that has changed quite a bit.  If you want to know where, you’ll have to come on a ride and learn them the old way.

The first new to me road was easy to find and marked with one of those signposts with a picture of a car and said 4×4 only or something.  It turned out to be very fun and  pretty easy except for one short section where your family truckster would not be happy.  B- difficulty.

2nd one used to always be gated.  Gate was open.  I was told long ago that it was difficult and rocky and too hard.  It was not.  Challenging maybe, but not really hard.  Steep, big water bars, silt, lots of loose rocks.  Fun but short.  B- difficulty.

The last of the new ones was a B+ difficulty.  There was a gate.  But the gate was open.  Rough, rocky, steep.  Little used.  When the view got really good I stopped.  Well, that’s where I fell, but the view was really good there.  A little rough and remote for solo riding.  A look at Google Earth suggests its a dead end anyway, somewhere up the ridge.

The last route, the one that we have done occasionally in the past, was great.  It has changed a bit.  The first half is fast, fun, smooth gravel.  The 2nd half used to have a long section of rock gardens and some ruts.  Sometime, probably a couple years back, it got smoothed over.  More gravel.  Less ruts.   The last bit is a little rocky but still pretty easy.  B-.

Along the way there were other routes we don’t use enough.  Good forest roads that are C rides but fun and shady.  Great for a hot day.  Great for a picnic lunch.  Great for getting to places we go by a different route.

Look for an impromptu ride in a couple of weeks.  Maybe August 1st or 2nd.

The clickers are pretty close now.
