ParticipantI use and have been using a Garmin 600. Much more rugged than a cell phone, batteries last longer, works with any gloves, you can use it without stopping and you can see it in direct sunlight. Maps with trails are easy to come by. Phones are ok I’ve tried most of the apps they work good its the device they are on that’s weak and fragile. I always keep going back to my Garmin had it for years. It’s road with me all over the Americas on the handle bars and still working. They both have their pros and cons. The phone is a back up. I think it’s more of a personal preference.

Participant? The only thing they changed on the bike were the shocks. With the 200 pounds of extra stuff they added you would have to do that to any bike.
